A quality golf hitting mat is an investment. With proper care, your mat can last 3-5 years or more. Here is how to maintain it.
Weekly Maintenance
- Brush the turf fibers with a stiff broom to restore upright position
- Wipe down the EVA base with a damp cloth
- Check for debris between turf fibers
- Rotate the mat 180 degrees every 2 weeks for even wear
Monthly Deep Cleaning
- Move the mat to a well-ventilated area
- Vacuum the turf surface to remove dirt and debris
- Mix mild soap with warm water
- Scrub the turf gently with a soft brush
- Rinse thoroughly with a hose
- Let dry completely before using
Storage Tips
- Store indoors when not in use for extended periods
- Keep away from direct sunlight to prevent UV damage
- Store flat or rolled (never folded with creases)
- Keep in a dry area to prevent mold on the EVA base
When to Replace Your Mat
Replace your hitting mat when you notice: excessive wear in the hitting area, reduced shock absorption, visible cracks in the EVA base, or when the turf no longer springs back.
Extending Mat Life
- Use a separate tee for driver practice (don't jam tees into the turf)
- Avoid twisting your feet on the mat (causes turf wear)
- Let the mat rest 24 hours after a long practice session
- Use a mat protector or cover when not in use
A well-maintained hitting mat provides consistent practice conditions and protects your joints. Take care of it and it will take care of your game.
